I found this interesting but a bit scattered. I enjoyed learning more about Laing herself and her path, and there were many interesting facts in this book but it also felt a bit loose and not as strong as some of her previous books, certainly not as much as Lonely City for example.

There are difficult subjects contained in this book and they are not handled with enough care for the reader. The coverage of cancer I found really upsetting, and the coverage of sexual violence was really uncomfortable. Not quite sensationalised but I did feel provoked into upset, when it didn't have to be that way.

Fascinating and deeply interdisciplinary, as is characteristic of Laing's nonfiction writing. I almost don't want to give it a rating because I'm not sure if that best captures the thought-provoking nature of Laing's work. I don't necessarily agree with every conclusion she draws (or, to be more accurate, I fear some of her argument is too "tidy" for space's sake), but I thoroughly enjoyed the journey throughout history. What, truly, is a body? The body's presence in the collective, relationship to the soul, role in the pursuit of liberation...? Questions I'll continue to ponder.
Grab this, and, of course, THE LONELY CITY too :)
