I didn’t read the whole of this book as a lot of it wasn’t relevant to my research, but what I did read was very insightful and thoughtful. It’s very clear that Hutton knows what he’s talking about, and he looked at some interesting and global perspectives of the witch. As usual with scholarly writing, it was a bit tedious to get through at times.

2,5 stars. Okay this was way more academical than I expected and read more like a thesis than an average non-fiction novel. It was interesting, but not what I was looking for and to be fair, even compared to some other academical articles, it was quite dry.

Very academic text. I would only suggesting reading if you are truly interested in the topic or are using it for research.

What is a witch? Interestingly enough even a definition is hard to come across in this book. Hutton is an expert in many areas and this serves him well as he explores the differences between witchcraft, medicine and religion and the perception of witchcraft across the globe and the centuries. This book is fascinating and Hutton is a well-researched guide and link maker.

I received this book in a goodreads giveaway.

DNF - Did not finish.

I have tried to read this book on and off for years now. There is so much information being thrown at you that it is difficult to read for a casual reader like myself.

A surprisingly scholarly history of (mostly European) witchcraft
