Three and a half stars.
I'm kinda glad Mr. Poe hasn't shown up in this book. The Baudelaires have become quite independent and have taken the matter of answering the many mysteries surrounding their lives in their hands. I mean, they managed to fool Count Olaf with their disguises (the tables had turned but gaaah Olivia :(() And good god that ending.
I also liked the carnival setting. It did make me uncomfortable and sad though because of how the "freaks" and the lions were treated. I hate that. But anyway, pretty good!

I think this is my least favorite book of them all. Not much really happens in it and it was really just a setup for the next book.

The joke is getting a little beat down by book nine but there were a few things that kept it fresh in this one. The children once more wrestle with their morality and this is becoming my favorite part of these books. The moral conundrum of slipping into doing something bad for a good reason. The adults continue to be...just the worst, unbelievably so but we do start getting at least a few more hints as to where this is all leading. I'm very curious for book ten.
