It's hard to rate a book of stories by various authors, as obviously the quality between stories vary widely. I was smart with this book of short stories and took a year to read it, reading a book, then a story, then a book, etc. There were short stories, what seemed to chapters out of longer books, and essays. Some were really good, some were bad, most were mediocre.

The ones I really liked were Abilene in 1868 by Joseph McCoy, The Kid by Water Noble Burns, The Round Up by Theodore Roosevelt, An Eleven Hundred Mile Horseback Ride Down the Chisholm Trail by Charles Siringo, The Cattle Country of the Far West by Theodore Roosevelt, and On the Trail by Zane Grey (although obviously part of a larger book, so it kind of leaves you hanging).

I gave up on this book several stories in. If these are the best stories, I'd hate to see what didn't make the cut. A lot of the stories seemed to just be rambling recollections by old cowboys. I read a few pages of the Karl May story as it was more of an actual story, but eventually gave it up. Not a great read.
