While it took me a few chapters to get into the book, things quickly pick up and every time I thought I knew what was happening, I was wrong - which kept me reading and on my toes. I enjoyed the way that the author wrote the characters and the way they responded to certain things was believable for their age. I have to admit, certain parts of this book had my heart racing more than I anticipated.

A group of teenagers each with their own secret that have a ritual of telling it to their “dark place.”  They don’t know who built the dark place or why, but it has become theirs. Then, somebody knows their secrets and starts to individually blackmail them and threaten their families, and it is them that have to figure out who is the bad guy before someone gets hurt, or worse.

This book was definitely interesting and suspenseful. I think it was a little underwhelming at times but overall worth reading. This book definitely gave me “I know what you did last summer” vibes.

I was able to get through this with the quick chapters but I just wasn’t a fan. I want to keep in mind that it was YA so it could be better for a different audience, it was just a lot of eye rolling for me.

I didn’t realize until I was about 1/4 of the way in that it was YA, which I guess makes it a little more tolerable.

The dialogue is very clunky and unnatural. There were several exchanges that left me rolling my eyes, wondering if this author knows a single teenager - or if ever actually was one himself.

The premise was interesting enough and kept me from DNF (barely), but the characters shallow despite seeming to try really, really hard to be deep. If felt like it was trying so hard to convey a meaningful message but failing miserably.

Just not a great book.
