So far I'm liking this vol. more than the first but maybe I'm just getting used to how shitty people are in the story. Mr. Vaughn is great at showing us the worst of humanity. What I didn't love was the switch in the artist- women tend to have too youthful, doll-like faces (so that I can't tell that one is a mother to someone 16+?) and they drew 355's dreads so fucked up. Why does her hair look so choppy? But I guess one bonus is that Dr. Mann finally looks Asian.

  1. IDF and Representative Brown vs. Natalya and astronauts and the main crew. 2/3 on board ISS are men and they're about to land back on Earth.
  2. Meanwhile, the gang find "hot suite" (disguised military facility). But IDF already there. Alter, leader of the IDF, wants to kill Yorick, not to bring him back to Brown. Also tries to shoot down the shuttle. Rationale is that if we have something outside to fight about, we won't fight amongst ourselves??
  3. Shuttle crashes and burns and Ciba, the woman aboard, is the only one who makes it out alive.
  4. Well the good thing is that Ciba's pregnant.
  5. It's Hero.
  6. Who is Toyota??
  7. "The last man saves the world. By committing suicide, and letting the women save themselves."
  8. Agent 711, 355's friend, watches over Yorick while 355 and Dr. Mann take Ampersand to a hospital.
  9. Yorick gets subjected to various forms of torture and we learn about some repressed sexual history, but the most important we discover is why Yorick tries so damn hard to get himself killed, putting 355 and Dr. Mann's lives in further danger.
    • I've always wondered about this because even if he hated the idea of being escorted the whole way to his girlfriend, he might be worried about the other people he's putting in danger, if not his own life. At every turn, he reveals himself, plunges into dangerous situations and has a general lack of disregard for self preservation. From 711's tactics (and maybe the traveling theater troupe), we see that he's probably feeling a combination of pressure, the burden of responsibility and trauma, which is why he's so trigger happy.
  10. One half of the country's starving because of a roadblock which isn't letting the necessary supply and food go through from the other side. Dr. Mann tries to bargain with them by selling her medical skills, which only angers the leader, who's a nurse herself.
  11. Dr. Mann admits to wanting to impress 355 because she likes her. (And I'm pretty sure 355 likes Yorick.) I really hope this doesn't get messy in this regard because I'm not a fan of this sort of drama.
  12. Yorick ends up killing someone. Not sure if this is the first time, but we don't really like to talk about what we need to do to survive.
  13. Ciba gave birth to a baby boy.

Better than vol 2 and I'm starting to like Y as a character.

There was one subplot I didn't like much. The rest was just as amazing as Book One!

It's been a hot second since I read the first volume of this series, but luckily, when I opened this up to read one final book before the year's end, I was glad I remembered all the necessary details in order to hop back on board for this wonderful, wild ride.

There was a lot to love in this volume, but I was particularly tickled by the interlude where the acting troupe found Ampersand, how the women in the town wanted the actors to work on a new soap opera; hilarious.

It also ended on a proper cliffhanger with Hero showing up where the second-to-last man on earth was just born and luckily, I just got volume three for Christmas, so I'll definitely be reading what happens next a lot sooner than I read this volume after volume one!

While I enjoyed Book One, I wasn't that invested in the characters yet. After Book Two though, I am definitely fully invested! I am also fully invested in the plot and all the twists and turns. This has been a blast. The whole plot line with the astronauts, woo! And Ampersand, that monkey needs to be protected at all costs. (And Yorick too, I suppose 🤪) And some secrets revealed! I enjoyed this volume and I'm looking forward to more.
