This story was so much more than "a rugby romance". If you're looking for a tough stuff young adult story, this is it. There is a love story but it's very much B-plot.
Shannon and Johnny do not have a happy ending at the end of this book.

Heavy Triggers for:
Child abuse
Abusive family dynamics
eating disorders
Abandonment
Bullying
Social pressure
Anxiety
Alcoholism

Please read with care and caution.

After years of bullying Shannon Lynch is finally getting a new start at Tommen High School. She'll be with friends she hasn't seen in years and it gives her a few hours day away from her abusive home life. Everything is going great her first day. That is until and unportioned accident on the rugby field and throws her in the path of Tommens golden boy.

Johnny Kavaugh is a rugby god to his peers but is hiding a secret that could lead to the end of his career before it's even began. He's injured, badly. After an outburst on the field he's crosses paths with Shannon, like the river, and he's completely gone for.

There are no words to describe how much I loved this book. Such a slow burn that depicts high school love so sweetly.
Both characters have strengths and weaknesses that balance each other out and had me rooting for them the whole time. Not only did I love Shannon, like the river, and Johnny, but I enjoyed all the size characters too! Gibsie, Joey, Claire, even Lizzie proved to be lovable. I was initially intimidated by the page count and find size but I found myself able to fly through chunks when I made sure to dedicate time! Overall such a cute high school sports romance I will certainly be continuing!

This book was HARD to get through. It was pretty dark and gritty and you kind of just want to shake the main characters a bit. The characters are immature and could've made better choices, but they're children so it's understandable. That doesn't mean I didn't ADORE these characters, because I did. All of them. I am rooting for all of them to have a happily ever after and figure their stuff out. The romance... was amazing. There was insta-attraction, but the love story took a while to develop, which I liked. Neither one of them really wanted anything and tried to fight against their attraction, but we know that never works. I hated the ending, but was glad that the big secret was finally out and I'm hoping for a HEA in book 2.
