This was my first book by Cara Hunter and I was pleasantly surprised! I really enjoyed the unique storytelling format and all that came with it. The story follows a true crime TV series investigating a cold case, thus the book is composed of the episode scripts, news clips on the show, and social media comments on the episodes, among other formats. It was quite different from what I’ve found in other novels, and really fun to follow!
The crime aspect was also interesting to follow, although there was quite a big cast of characters, so it was not always easy to follow who was who, especially in the first parts of the book. The mystery itself was also a bit confusing at times due to the multiple lines of investigation, and there were quite a lot of (unexpected!!) plot twists, but I still think the final reveal paid off.
It was just a really neat reading experience overall, and I’m curious to check other works by the author.

4.5 A compelling read. With many characters and jump cuts it was still incredibly easy to follow along with.

Once I got into this book I couldn’t put it down. It was such a good read. My only regret was not finishing it sooner. It’s such a unique format for a book. Definitely would read more like it.

I had a fun time reading Murder in the Family. The mixed-media style was super fun, with all the newspaper clippings, interview transcripts, messages, and Reddit posts—it made me feel like an actual detective, which I loved.
I pretty much figured out who the killer was and most of the twists early on, but there was one reveal that caught me off guard, which was surprising and a nice change for me (lmao). Even though I guessed a lot, that twist kept me hooked.
That being said, the ending was a bit of a letdown. It felt pretty boring compared to the rest of the book. The last newspaper excerpt left things feeling a bit open-ended for me—like, did Rebecca kill him?. It left me wondering if the story was fully finished or if there was something more to uncover.
Overall, the concept was cool, and I had a fun time reading it. Despite the slower ending, the mixed-media approach made it an enjoyable read.
