4.5 stars. Not to be read as a stand-alone book though, as most of the plot points surround the history of the characters. The actual crime is a bit messy and confusing. But I loved the backstories that were told to bring the characters more to life.

#StoryGraph: fiction crime mystery thriller
448 pages • first pub 2012

Will Trent is a brilliant agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Newly in love, he is beginning to put a difficult past behind him.

Then a local college student goes missing, and Will is inexplicably kept off the case by his supervisor and mentor, deputy director Amanda Wagner. Will cannot fathom Amanda's motivation until the two of them literally collide in an abandoned orphanage they have both been drawn to for different reasons.

Decades before, when his father was imprisoned for murder, this was Will's home. It appears that the case that launched Amanda's career forty years ago has suddenly come back to life-and it involves the long-held mystery of Will's birth and parentage. Now these two dauntless investigators will each need to face down demons from the past if they are to prevent an even greater terror from being unleashed.

Absolutely incredible and that ending?! I’ll be thinking about this book for a very long time.

I stayed up way too late finishing this one. This book delivers answers to so many lingering questions about the characters' histories while also advancing their stories forward in ways that were deeply satisfying, knowing all they've been through. I really love this series.

I’m entirely in love with this series, and this book was no different. It was definitely hard to stomach the flashbacks to the 70’s and the way female cops and women in general were treated. I’m really glad the topic was brought up and Amanda’s backstory was introduced into the series. This was my favorite book of the series so far.

Took forever to get through

The jumping back and forth was confusing. The story line was the weakest of the whole series so far. Hopefully, the next 5 will be good I have already bought them.

"Will Trent is a brilliant agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Newly in love, he is beginning to put a difficult past behind him. Will cannot fathom Amanda's motivation until the two of them literally collide in an abandoned orphanage they have both been drawn to for different reasons. Decades before - when Will's father was imprisoned for murder - this was his home. . . .
Flash back nearly forty years. In the summer Will Trent was born, Amanda Wagner is going to college, making Sunday dinners for her father, taking her first steps in the boys' club that is the Atlanta Police Department. One of her first cases is to investigate a brutal crime in one of the city's worst neighborhoods. Amanda and her partner, Evelyn, are the only ones who seem to care if an arrest is ever made.
Now the case that launched Amanda's career has suddenly come back to life, intertwined with the long-held mystery of Will's birth and parentage. And these two dauntless investigators will each need to face down demons from the past if they are to prevent an even greater terror from being unleashed." (From Amazon)

This is the novel Slaughter fans have been waiting for since we met Will and Amanda. We go back to the 1970s and see how Amanda becomes the woman she is today and her relationship with Will. Will continues to struggle with Angie's hold on him. I was gripped by this novel from cover to cover.
