I heard about this book because I listen to Abigail’s podcast, Parsha in Progress. As someone who discovered and began to delve into her Jewish identity at 19, I related to Abby’s feelings of wanting to learn but also being self-conscious about not knowing things. Like Abby, I have learned the most by experiencing the Hebrew calendar in real time and I have made my own Shabbat and holiday rituals because I believe our tradition is fluid. I appreciated the chapter on Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut - two Israeli holidays that I, as a progressive American Jew, struggle with. Including them in this book forced me to think about my own feelings toward these somewhat controversial days. Overall, I got a lot out of this book and I’m grateful to Abby for sharing this part of her Jewish Journey with the world. I want to end my review with the words of Rabbi David Kalb, who on Simchat Torah describes the People of the Book: “Where in the world is there a people that loves a book so much that they dance around with it? It’s a celebration of the biggest book club in the world.”

I skipped a few holidays (such a metaphor for real life) but I got the gist. I liked the confirmation that Shabbat is left to your interpretation and you can celebrate it however you choose. Jewish study can be say, reading this book. Make your own rules and take from the holidays whatever message you need. Also, the feminist seder sounded awesome and is something I would like to participate in once we're able to gather again.

Absolutely adored this journey through her year of growth. It was real, but educational. It was impactful, but not dramatic. It's inspired me to experience my own year, and track it with a BuJo spread. #BuJoJew
