Two lost souls. Two sets of secrets. Can a chance meeting mend two broken hearts?

Geocaching might be my new podcast. I’ve never been geocaching but am fascinated by it and love reading about it. Wren and Marshall meet while geocaching and they have me wanting to put on outdoor clothes and make my own discoveries.

Wren’s and Marshall’s individual stories are both heart wrenching and even a little shocking, but the book also conveys a sense of hope and resiliency. A study of grief and loss and how the vulnerabilities those feelings cause can be overcome and one can come out on the other side. Their journey was real and believable. And I both sympathized and rooted for them individually and as a couple. Their flaws and insecurities made them relatable.

This is not your normal love story.

Thank you to Macmillan/St. Martin’s Press for sending me an ARC of this title. I received this copy for free and this review contains my honest opinions.

From the synopsis on the copy I received I definitely thought this story was going to focus more on geocaching, and I was really looking forward to a story about exploration, hiking, and geocaching in a state with hikes I’m very familiar with. I did really enjoy the first part of this novel, which was exactly what the synopsis had set my expectations up for, but geocaching was really only included as a way for the two main characters to meet and not as a backbone of the plot.

The story focuses on healing from trauma and moving forward with your life, which could have blended beautifully with the geocaching part I was so excited for, but instead the story quickly moves away and the second half of this novel contains several of my least favorite tropes in fiction. I would encourage other readers take note of content warnings: I would have never picked this up if I knew some of the plot points (and character decisions) in the second half of the book.

Even though this turned out to not be my favorite title, thank you again to the publisher for sending me a free ARC.

I dunno, the plot was a bit all over the place.

And the pacing was wild considering Marshall and Wren know each other for under a week in the first half and then literal months span the second half of the story.

The geocaching angle was almost completely dropped in the second half of the story for a bit too predictable twist/trope that felt very contrived and uninspired.

Like soap opera, but lame.

And in spite of the heavy-handed, manufactured drama moments, I never really felt any angst as a reader, and that’s kind of all that I was really looking for in this read.

There were some good lines in terms of the quality of the writing that I enjoyed, but structurally, from a plot perspective, I was not enthused.
