This continues where the first book left off. We learn a lot about the winter court, so lots more worldbuilding, and deadly fae politics and intrigue.

Meghan got on my nerves a little at the beginning. Relationship issues. That aside, things pick up when the iron fae plotting sets everyone in motion and the action becomes more frantic. Loved Ironhorse in this outing, and Leaninsidhe, but things get truly sucky for my favourite mischievous character. So, Puck is absent at the beginning but he arrives to save the day, as usual, and offers many humorous asides and quips. Plus, the frenemies element between Puck and Ash is great reading; “They’re either best friends or darkest enemies, I can’t tell which.”

Meghan conveniently gets a little help from her fae friends more often than I'd like which weakens her character. But overall, I liked the journey and didn't expect such a dramatic ending for the star-crossed summer princess and winter prince.

Following on from the first book in the series where Meghan was only just beginning to learn who she is, what she is, and what she can do, she now finds herself having to fulfil the promise she made to Ash, the Unseelie prince: to return with him to the Winter court as part of the bargain they made. He certainly fulfilled his side of the deal in helping her retrieve her young brother from the evil clutches of Machina, the Iron king, and also nearly died in the process.

Upon returning to the Winter court, Meghan soon comes to realize that the side of Ash she saw on their adventures has vanished. The boy that looked at her like she was the most precious thing in the world at times, now has only cold contempt in he eyes whenever he sees her. Meghan is devastated by this turnabout. If that's not enough to deal with, Ash's brother Rowan and his mother, Queen Mab, are also doing everything they can to make sure Meghan's stay with them is as miserable as possible. The Unseelie thrive off games and torments and consider emotions a terrible weakness. She'd thought Ash was the exception to this rule, now she's coming to think she may have been very wrong about that.

What followed this was another fantastic story, filled with all the wonderful world-building and characterization I enjoyed in the first book, building to an exhilarating and climatic ending. I did feel this one had a rather slow section right in the middle of the book where not enough was happening for me, so it isn't getting the 5 stars that book one received, but it had definitely redeemed itself by the ending.

A few clues about a potential future plot were dropped here and there in this book and I'm eager to see where this will lead. Also, I'm looking forward to seeing how Meghan's personal relationships progress after the big decisions that were made in this book.

All in all another great read. I highly recommend this series.

I'm in love all over again. To start off i love everything about Meghan Chase and how her character develops throughout the story. Starting as a heart broken Summer princess isolated in Mab's court, her resolve to not let herself be affected by Ash's traitorous demeanor, Mab or any of the winter fae is admirable. She is almost as indifferent as the winter fey themselves but her summer shows. From the very beginning i knew Ash wasn't the bad guy and i felt bad for Meghan because she honestly believed that Ash had manipulated her to bring her to Mab. Although his demeanor was hurtful i knew that Meghan could not possibly truly hate him, their love is much too great for that.

What really took me by surprise though was Puck's reappearance. I was honestly just as shocked and relieved as Meghan. Only i felt guilty the moment he was mentioned. He was obviously in love with Meghan and this has been evident for a while. But Meghan's love for Ash is even greater than her love for Puck. And that's a little sad because Puck is rather lovable. (But my OTP is Meghan and Ash.) I must admit that when Puck kissed Meghan i yelled at the book because not only was it a shock but i was upset that Meghan would let herself lead him on when she knew that it would most likely never happen. Although she did mention the guilt she felt right afterwords because she thought of Ash.

Something i love so much about this book is that it doesn't just focus on the love between Ash and Meghan but the love Meghan holds for her family, home, the Nevernever, and all the friends that she's made along the way. After she is only (half) human.

Aside from Meghan's character development I loved reading about Ash's changes throughout the book. From a cold, silent and deadly Winter Prince only seeking revenge for the loss of his past love to someone who will risk everything he has to offer to assure that the one he loves most will be free of harm.

Everything about this book was amazing and i especially loved the fact that Kagawa-Sama mentioned Meghan having a Naruto poster in her room. I am in love with the characters of this book i can't believe i took so long to read this.

So I really missed reading about the fae, but I came to realize that these books are kind of like the Percy Jackson equivalents of fae books, only without the clever in-jokes. I'll probably read the third one anyway, because I already checked it out from the library.
