The art is simple and I didn't want to like the book. But it's written well and it's got a good twist. And the art grew on me. A bit wordy but that didn't seem to matter.

Cute, but... let's maybe not teach kids to breach consent for personal gain, maybe?

This is one of my absolute favorite children's books, and one of my favorite books in general. Also, Alexander is adorable!

We've been going through Leo Lionni's fables, one by one, and this is one of the best ones. Just like [b:Sylvester and the Magic Pebble|457762|Sylvester and the Magic Pebble|William Steig|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1328018633s/457762.jpg|446280], this story is a good reminder to be careful what you wish for. It should also teach you not to envy others, because they may not have it any better than you at the end of the day. Thankfully, our hero Alexander has a last minute change of heart and makes a good choice. The illustrations are wonderful, but the version we are reading is lacking some critical pictures though.

Such a sweet book. I've read it to my children at home and my Kindergarten students and they all love it.
