I'm not sure I understood any of Morrison's high concept lovecraftian Sci-fi concept. Lavish images but at times sadly much to clever for its own good.

I couldn't tell you what this story was about if I wanted to. Cosmic horror, body mutilation, ancient Gods, reality and dreams intertwined. Honestly, it made little sense to me.

Just putting this book down after reading the afterword which serves as a sort of commentary of the book issue by issue by Grant Morrison. I’m going to preface this by saying I’m a massive Morrison fan and I’ve always gushed over how he loves to challenge the status quo and try something new. And oh boy does he try something new with this series. It’s non-linear and at times really really out there (in true Morrison fashion!) but the themes and ideas Morrison brings up are pretty interesting and definitely serve as food for thought. The themes of religion, creation and being human are the strongest portrayed in my opinion. Morrison tells a story that doesn’t feel like any other comic I’ve read. Structurally, it’s non linear as stated before. But there’s loads of non-linear stories across many mediums. But this book jumps around between different points in time, dreams, visions, alternate realities and way more. The book challenges what the reader accepts as reality and several times mentions “nothing is real”.

The art team on this book did a great job as well. Chris Burnham kills the layouts and pencils while Nathan Fairbairn’s colors compliments the art perfectly.

Overall, this book was a unique experience you won’t get anywhere else. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, you definitely have to be into how a story is constructed to appreciate what this book sets out to do. I did enjoy it though and can see myself revisiting it in the near future.

Filled with stunningly grotesque imagery and some interesting ideas, but too nonlinear and Lovecraftian for my taste.
