Quick, easy, and predictable. Characters could have been more developed.

I didn’t know it was possible to write a story without ANY CONFLICT WHATSOEVER but Robyn Carr has done it! In our latest instalment, a lonely female FBI agent recovering from being shot in the line of duty falls in love with an ex-con with a heart of gold. Is that the conflict? I guess? OK.

Could have been a contender. Everything was just too abrupt and predictable, though I won't say it was a bad book because I finished it and will read more if Carr writes them.

Robyn Carr's The Chance is the fourth in a series, but my first foray in the Thunder Point franchise. The author pretty recognizable in the contemporary romance genre (she's written over fifty books), I wanted to expand my horizons -- so to speak -- and find new series to read. The Chance was not that opportunity.

The 'hook' to the fourth entry of an established series gained my attention because of its star-crossed lovers theme, imagine my surprise when:

Spoiler
+ The 'reformed criminal' is actually only a
Spoilergetaway driver for those who committed the crime.

+ There is no 'recently discovered daughter':
Spoilerhe's known about her for awhile, is trying to get to know her (found out about her a year before the beginning of the book)
and despite being in the hook/description, the daughter in question is barely in the book.

And that's just the issues I had with the rather misleading book description. With the actual book plot:

Spoiler
+ We have a problem if I'm more interested in side plots/romances than the main couple, particularly if it's marketed as a romance novel. This has happened a few times already, but not often.
+ I was also not feeling the romance for any of the couples -- the duo couples (one main, one background) who got together were sweet in their interactions, but that's about as far as it got.
+
SpoilerI feel smarter than the FBI agent -- the female romance lead -- since I figured out what was happening to her father long before she did.

+ The only plot (it was a pretty small side plot) I cared about at this point, taken away from the others due to lack of passion, already guessed plots (refer to above points), was happening with Justin and his family.
+ Therefore, the ending didn't leave much resolution to the plot I cared about by this point. In addition, the ending was particularly sudden. (An epilogue could have helped here.)

For all of the reasons above, while this novel was fair, I'm only rating this two stars.

Another wonderfully beautiful Thunder Point story. I wanna move there, live in that town with those people. It's wonderful!

Solid entry in the Thunder Point series, not exceptional, but good, with the traditional happy ending. Therese Plummer as usual makes you forget it's only one person reading this, not a full cast - she is great!

I really enjoyed this one a lot...much more than the 3rd book in the series. The main couple in this book was a lot more interesting and had a lot more chemistry. At times it felt a little over the top and cheesy...but overall a very enjoyable book.

There is something so endearing about this series and it starts with the narrator Therese Plummer. Her voice feels smooth and velvety. When I am listening to this book, I feel relaxed and chilled out-- like I am sitting on a hammock with a glass of wine. Her various voices fit the personalities so well, her pace is excellent, her cadence is soothing and her chuckles make me chuckle. The narrator makes the story come to life!

The Chance picked up right after the raid on the compound from Book 3, The Hero. FBI Agent Laine Carrington was still recovering from the gunshot wound she sustained while being held hostage by the cult leader. She was successful in rescuing Devyn and the other members and as a result, she was getting a commendation from the FBI. She wasn’t sure what direction her career would take after that, so she decided to come Thunder Point to recuperate and also get closure. There, Laine met ex-con and local garage owner Eric Gentry (also the father of Gina’s daughter Ashley) and she was instantly attracted to him. They were both trying to find solid ground and they had fun together.

Laine was hilarious as she was such a cavewoman. Me see, me want, me take. Good for her. It was really cool to see a woman not playing games or pretend coyness. Instead, Laine was aggressive, vocal and upfront about what she wanted from Eric. I also loved her devotion to the father who inadvertently hurt her so much over the years. She got a chance to bond with him as well as closure while starting a new life with Eric. Eric was redeemed in this book because we finally see the dependable man he has become. He paid his debt to society and now cherishes his responsibilities to his loved ones.

I really enjoyed the side story with Al, Ray Anne & Justin. Ray Anne has been a permanent fixture in all the prior stories as she is the local relator extraordinaire. She’s had some epic battle with Lou Anne but we finally see the softer side of Ray Anne. I loved the “make up” regime and Al being nonplussed about it. I also loved Justin’s unwavering devotion to his family and how his tenacity made the runaway Al finally put down some roots.

This series is becoming one of my favorites. It’s everything I enjoy in Contemporary Romances. It has a great plot, great writing, and such likable characters. It has been a fun ride so far. I look forward to the next one.

We never though we'd say this, but there's not enough angst in this book. For a couple made up of an FBI agent and an ex-con, there's very little keeping them apart. When they are separated by distance, it gets a little dumb. Plus we have the weirdest B-plot ever. Also, not enough sex. (Plus the heroine's name is Laine and that just made the book that much more disappointing for PlotTrysts Laine.)

7-Word Summaries:

Laine: A grievous insult to my name. Cars.

Meg: Ex-con and FBI agent meet-cute, but boring.
