This book is a 10/10. Loved every minute of this read. I committed hard to reading this book and it was worth every cent of my kindle unlimited subscription.

*Whew*

This book was SO good! There was so much that happened in this story and I really liked Kenya and how she stood up for herself, although I wish she would have done that more with her “family”, but I guess you can say she had the last laugh. Her “sister” Sasha, though, still needed to have some sense knocked into her AND her mother Felice! Tuh! *bombastic side eye!* I cannot stand them! This book is a 4/5 star ⭐️ read for me!

I see you Nia Arthurs! I see what you’re trying to do and you’re doing well! Love seeing Black women being the main characters and WINNING!

This was my first Nia Arthurs book, and I went in completely blind, picking it based on the cover I saw on Hoopla (which was different from the one on other platforms). The cover I chose had a curly-haired woman and a man in a business suit, but if I’d seen the other one with the guy throwing his suit jacket over his shoulder, I probably wouldn’t have picked it. I opted to listen to the audiobook, and while the writing and story were decent, the male narrator just wasn’t it for me. I feel like I would’ve enjoyed the book more if I’d read it instead.

The story opens with some immediate drama, which drives the plot throughout the book. This situation and learning about Kenya's family dynamic explains why the she behaves the way she does, but honestly, her actions really annoyed me. And don’t even get me started on her family—they had me ready to throw hands!

Kenya Jones
Spoilerfinds out her boyfriend is cheating on her with her stepsister,
and while her reaction was understandable, I found it strange that she had all this anger for everyone except the actual people who hurt her. Then there’s Holland Alistair, the CEO of the company where Kenya starts working. He’s grumpy and demanding, working her to the bone—because he’s attracted to her? It felt odd, to say the least.

As for the romance? It’s there, but the book is more about how mean Holland is to Kenya and how mean Kenya is to everyone else. It’s a slow, slow burn, not the insta-love variety. The focus is mostly on the workplace dynamic, and we only get snippets of their personal lives. Holland has a daughter, which is supposed to soften his character, but it wasn’t enough for me to really connect with him.

The book touches on themes like grief, loss, dysfunctional family dynamics, single parenthood, and a workplace romance. One thing that really made me pause was the way Kenya was described throughout. It felt forced and out of place. Yes, she’s Black and Holland is white, but I found the way her physical features were repeatedly pointed out to be unnecessary and off-putting. Do you like her, or are you fetishizing her?

Overall, the book wasn’t bad, but it felt too focused on the business side of things and didn’t dive deep enough into character development or closure. Kenya’s family drama, in particular, could have been wrapped up better—at the very least, there should have been an apology somewhere.
