The author is pretty good at creating the mood and atmosphere of the scene through words. Nevertheless, there's a lot of rambling. When it comes to short pieces of fiction, one can not afford to be sloppy with words. In my opinion, this book could've used a good editor that would've helped to refine the stories.

The weakest of the six Pushkin Press Japanese Novellas. I couldn't get into it at all, very disappointed in it. I was looking forward for this one.

Only a short read so not much time wasted and lost.

If you are a stream of consciousness hater, I do not recommend this.

Seeing these mundane reactions towards war, the disconnect but also the sympathy, was intriguing.

The End of the Moment We Had is a short novella type boom with two stories in it. The first one takes place during the Iraq war. Two people meet in Tokyo at a bar during an event and go to a love hotel. They spend several days there. The story has an almost dream like quality and it makes us feel as if the story is taking place elsewhere and we are just watching it from afar. There is no clear resolution at the end and it feels like the musings of the main characters.

The second story is about a young woman who is unhappy her husband. She takes an off from her work and lies down on her bed and observes her house, making note of the mold and grime which has accumulated over the years. She thinks of her husband who works two jobs but still she feels as if she wants something more from him. She becomes very depressed and starts reading a blog. This story reads like an exploration of thoughts with no clear cut agenda.

A very unique and interesting read which is not for everyone.
