I don't know how I feel about this book. The prose didn't blow my mind despite seeming like it was trying to at times. But in that sense, the writing was good.

The themes of this book are really challenging though and broaching a controversial topic and showing all the nuance and grey area, I think was done really well.

I still don't know how I feel about the conclusion of everything though. I'm trying to separate my conflict about the topic at hand with the characters involved. Like, while I loved the banter between Will and Louisa, at the end of the day, I'm not sure Will is a good person. And I think he seems quite shallow and unwavering in those shallow values. But I think we the reader is supposed to feel sympathy for him and maybe even try to route for him or care about his intentions and logic. But his intense certainly is just so off-putting to me. Idk.

Anyway, I think this book is supposed to be a bit uncomfortable and it's supposed to make you think (and cry). So I'm not gonna rate it on enjoyment. I'd rather rate it on the success of what it's set out to do. And this book may be very successful in that regard. But I'm just gonna give it 3 stars for now because I'm still working out wether or not the theme is resting on an overly convenient lack of arc and too static character and wether or not that's ok.

Would've been 5 stars but I would've preferred a different ending. Definitely not for the weak hearted, very touching and emotional story.๐Ÿ–ค

๐Ÿค I thoroughly loved this book!!!

Let me start with this: A few years ago, I watched this movie without knowing it was a book (Emilia Clark and Sam Claflin!!!! I love them both). I have read a few books this year by Jojo Moyes, so I figured I would try this one too.

Louisa Clarkโ€™s character jumps off the page from the very beginning. From the way she interacts with her sister to her growth journey, the writing takes you inside her head and heart in such an intimate way.

Sometimes we donโ€™t know how weโ€™ll react to a situation until we are in it, and watching Louisa stand tall in who she is, fight for what she believes, and allow her perspective to be broadened was the highlight of the book for me.

I have never been a caregiver, and I also have an Able Body. So I canโ€™t speak directly to the accuracy of the representation of quadriplegic people nor the people around them.

However, I found the way she depicted their evolving relationships and dialogue about Huge Decisions compelling and meaningful.

The chemistry and connection between Will and Louisa were palpable. I loved the way they pushed each other, in their own needed ways.

Their relationship felt so viscerally real, and even though I wouldnโ€™t call this book a romance, it was still a beautiful love story.

I loved that we got an occasional chapter from side charactersโ€™ POVs!! Genuinely loved those chapters because it gave the story another dimension.

Plus, with an ending like this one, I felt it was vitally important to have that โ€œoutside looking inโ€ perspective.

There were so many other smaller aspects I loved about this story! The depiction of sisterhood. The struggle of breaking out of habits. The importance of choice. The power of connection.

Jojo Moyes wrote a book wrought with frustratingly realistic characters and a heavy moral question. Itโ€™s impossible to read this book without self-reflection and empathy.

Even though I knew how this book would end (due to seeing the movie), I still found myself captivated by every page.

I cried. Multiple times. That is usually a rare thing when I read. This book broke my heart in so many ways for the characters, and I love that it was able to do that.

I am stingy with my stars. I don't give 5 stars often. A 5 star book is one that will stay with me for a lifetime. This is one of those books.

The characters were flawed. They were real. They were so very relatable.

I loved the way the author craftily laid out a few potential endings, but you were never sure which ending it would be until the very end.

It's a rare book that gets the ending just right. This one did that and more. Wow.
