When I first started reading this book, it kinda reminded me of a real life version of Henry Adams, a fictional African American town in the Blessing series by Beverly Jenkins. That's how the author started off in his life. One thing that disturbed me a little, is that he seems to think that people shouldn't need help as if he didn't receive help from others during his upbringing.
