I adore this book so much. Ove in all his grumpy glory is such a beautifully written, complex, and lovable character. The large majority of the other characters also such a wonderful cast of colorful, random people. The switches between the past and present between chapters is also an incredibly compelling way to to keep reader attention on the book. You’re switching between essentially two different stories that fit together, and both are so interesting to read. So I implore people people to read this adorable but albeit sad book about the shenanigans of a grumpy old man and his ridiculous neighbors.

To anyone afraid or disinterested to read this book because they don’t know if Ove will be an interesting enough character. Don’t be. He is so much more than grumpy old man and the unraveling of all his complexities is what made this book such a wonderful read.

(Tw: Suicide)
Spoiler The way Frederick Backman wrote about Ove’s suicidal thoughts also felt very realistic to me as a recovering suicidal person. The “ I just want to die.” And “Just let me die.” Is really so simple but its real and I appreciated that. As well how he portrayed the way simple little things get in the way of someone killing themselves. “ I can’t kill myself now, I have things I need to do.” Is also such a realistic depiction of a lot of suicidal people.

Added this one to my repeat list, it blew me away. Ove reminded me so much of my grandpa, all that grump hiding love and pain. Well written and a beautiful story.
