A few good ol' detective stories. They are each quick, fun reads and have the authentic feel of something written in another time. Sam Spade is the detective in a few of them, but it could have been any detective - there isn't anything that really points back go Maltese Falcon.

just read too many have lived for my senior seminar and found it fascinating... i appreciate any mentions of poetry. this was a great short story introduction to harold pinter & the theatre of menace

Hammett knew how to write stories. No messing about ; just the facts. He recorded a dark world, where everyone was on the take, and towns were run in the interests of the criminally inclined. He allows that world to tell its own story, without any of the characters telling you what to think about it.

Hey, it's Dashiell.
Excellent dialogue that one expects of Mr. Hammett. Tight, exciting plots through most of the stories. A couple of the non-Spade stories are a bit flat. Otherwise, the book is great for those who love the genre.
