Pretty cute, but I had no kid around to read it to sadly.

Picked this up in the digital library because I saw it was by BJ Novak. I didn’t read anything about it, just started it and was immediately thrown. Turns out this is *definitely* a children’s book. My little cousins would love this. 10/10 for creativity and silliness and fun.
My rating for myself in picking up this book: 0/10 bc I was totally thinking this would be like Mindy Kahling’s books. It was kind of a fun surprise tho.

The title and concept led me to presume that this is a transitional book: a book for eight year olds who are just starting to let go of illustrated books. But this is written for a much younger audience, maybe four year olds. And I’m frankly baffled as to why anyone would want to divert the tiny tots from their picture books.

At that age, they need tools to aid their imagination; it’s not an unhealthy dependency, as Novak implies. Moreover, accompanying artwork can help adults gauge whether kids are visual or auditory learners as well as help children create associations between images and words, which is a useful skill. So this dismissal of pictures as an unnecessary crutch did not sit well with me.

A brilliant read aloud. Had both the kids and adults laughing like crazy. Definitely one that will be read and read and read!

This book wasn't fun to read.. But it was fun for everyone else. And it's quite clever.

While this "book without pictures" is certainly gimmicky, it's a gimmick that works. My 4 year old was unbelievably excited to see his father "forced" to read such ridiculous words. The only thing that disappoints me about it is that I think it would have been even better had the author done away with the word-art in the books and settled for one-font for the "book" text and one font for the "reaction" text. If you have a pre-reading child, you should buy this book today!
