While Isabel's upbringing among the elite of San Francisco in wake of the Great Fire may have some considering her fortunate, neither of her parents particularly know how to interact with her, and she is often told to be "seen, not heard." While visiting her sculptor father in Carmel for the summer, Isabel mysteriously traverses the veil between the fairy realm and the human realm, and she immediately gets pulled into a life-or-death quest that will determine the outcome of a brutal war between the two halves of fairydom: seelie and unseelie. She quickly makes a few friends who also want to see her quest fulfilled, and she'll have to rely on them and her strange magical abilities to deliver a stolen necklace to the princess of the seelie.

Colleen said: “I didn’t like this, I LOVED it.”

I loved it too. Nothing too challenging here. Just a very sweet story about two kids who find themselves in the middle of a fairy war.

City on the Other Side is a fun adventure of a graphic novel. It tells the story of a girl who feels ignored by her parents and finds her place on the "other side" of a city where creatures of all kinds work together to stop a fairy war.

This was a fun amalgam of a historical setting and a fantasy world. Scott's story is filled with high stakes and developed characters--particularly on the other side with Isabel's sidekicks like Buttons. The story in the "real" world is decidedly less developed. Most bothersome to me was Isabel's relationship with her mother. Basically every other female character in this comic is capable and vocal. Yet we barely see Isabel's mother. There is no explanation for her behavior with Isabel or her general absence. Even as Isabel endeavors to fix other parts of her life (like her relationship with her father), her mother remains aloof. That was a problem for me. Robinson's gorgeous artwork makes up for many shortcomings in characterization. The entire book is dynamic, fast paced, and engrossing. The final pages of the denouement are particularly breathtaking.
