This book was a great lowkey spooky read. Comparable to Master's of Death in the ensemble cast assembly but with a little less of the wittiness. It was an interesting premise and the plot had some issue with pacing, but otherwise was well executed. I am going to check out book #2 and see how it goes.

Interesting story and characters. I greatly enjoyed the timelessness of the book. It took some time before I realized it was meant to be set in present day and I think that will allow it to age well. Very fun read for fans of traditional vampire novels.

'They want to kill monsters and I’m getting in their way because I’m the one who repairs them…'

First and foremost this felt like a book about found family. Dr. Greta Helsing and her monster friends are up against a cult of mysterious and murderful monks in this first in a trilogy. This small group of characters move into together because safety in numbers and, through circumstances both mundane and extraordinary, become a family. This had a cozy mystery vibe at times (think Legends & Lattes but with vampires, ghouls, and witches instead of orcs, elves, and gnomes) but with higher stakes. (No pun intended lol.)

'“You know perfectly well I don’t burst into flames in sunlight. That bit didn’t come along until Murnau in 1922.”'

Strange Practice is about a young female doctor named Greta who has inherited an unusual medical practice from her father: she cares for the vampires, witches, demons, and ghouls who secretly live in modern-day London. I enjoyed the book's densely written, Gothic-inspired style, which contrasted somewhat with its contemporary, urban setting. I like a book that requires me to pick up a dictionary occasionally! I didn't care much for the plot, involving a sect of murderous monks, but I really liked the cast of characters and how they had such unique personalities and the way they supported each other. I will likely continue reading the series, as I suspect it may get even better.

I borrowed this in kindle from my library--yay libraries!

So, this was great worldbuilding and really good plotting with excellent characters, and it ends in a satisfying way--and I already have the rest of the series lined up to check out from my library because this was engaging and with bits of terror to spice the fun. Not your typical heaven-hell kind of story, which suits me perfectly.

This is a super delightful book and I’m so happy to have stumbled across it! I love my vampires (and vampyres) with a side of humor.

I picked this strange little beauty on a mini vacation to Asheville, NC at an adorable little indie bookshop. This book has great pace, unforgettable characters and a fresh unique take on a world with monsters. The writing and language are smart and fresh and the story delivers. Happy to see there will be a sequel!
