amazing! I think some folks will find Southon’s inclusion of her opinions to be grating, but I think that’s part of the charm of reading history. Everything is a narrative, and her’s are both funny and compelling.

dnf at 17%. welp this was fun at first, but the writing is incredibly grating. southon tries way too hard to be funny and relatable, when all i really want is to learn more about ancient history and people. i don’t need references to modern phenomena to understand how a roman wedding works. it would also be great if she stopped point-blank saying things were “important.” tell me WHY.

beginning was ok but it got too tedious to be worth finishing. heaping piles of cutesy commentary gets old real fast.

made it 61% through.

This was a strikingly enjoyable book and a fascinating history of a fascinating woman. The writing style is really remarkable here; I’ve never read such an informal history book but the conversational tone fits the text really well.
