This is the book that really started my interest in the Robin Hood legend. I've read many modern adaptations of this story since I first read this book almost 10 years ago, and have recently started looking into the original legends of Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men.
This book, by Howard Pyle, is my favorite of Robin Hoods, because of the way the book is divided into parts. I also love how the reader gets to read about the events that lead to the most famous Merry Men becoming a part of Robin Hood's band of outlaws.

It’s been some time since I posted one of these, but I’ve still been reading! I’ve always had a love for the legend of Robin Hood, and as a result have known that most materials and retellings are oceans apart in content. Pyle’s delightful 1883 novelization is likely the most comprehensive, with only minor tweaks to string a unifying narrative to the original ballads. Most impressive is his grasp of the vernacular as well as his ability to illustrate as cunningly as he writes. Most disappointing, albeit not dealbreakers, is that Azeem and Duncan were non-existent (FYI: Wulf existed. Herein he is called Midge). Most interesting is although there are more characters in the novel, overall, I imagine those most famous with the faces of a mix of actors… majority from the Kevin Costner vehicle, but also heavily from Men In Tights lol. #readingrainbow

It was fun to finally hear the real adventures of Robin Hood after so many years of only knowing the Hollywood version. There's a surprising amount of singing among the Merry Men, which works quite well in an audiobook but probably less well in a physical book. Special shout-out to the narrator, who did an excellent job not only with singing all the songs but with giving great voice to the various characters.

Three stars because the stories were kinda repetitive, but reads beautifully like a series of fairy tales about Robin Hood. I could tell it was influenced by chivalry code of King Arthur and the knights. Only it was about honorable thieves. It’s interesting read.
