The protagonist of this book, Harry Haller, is so wonderfully depressing. It’s quite unlike anything I’ve ever read before. He feels like his soul in torn, like he is half woolf and half human. These two parts of his identity are constantly at war and makes his life intolerable. He feels life to be awfully difficult, is described as leading the life of a “Selbstmörder”, succumbs to Weltschmerz on a daily basis, drowns in self-hatred and is agonizingly lonely. And the way his anguish is described and depicted is just breath-taking. I absolutely loved it.
