This book was horrible. The end epiphany that I expected didn't happen. The main character was still unlikeable. It was predictable and dumb.

PLOT DAN CERITA

Buku ini lucu dan cukup relatable bagi sebagian orang. Cocok bagi para penyuka tidur, khususnya perempuan karena kesan feminisnya sangat terpancar, namun tersirat (ngerti ga maksudnya? :P). Ceritanya aneh, tetapi saya suka hal yang bizarre!

Sebenarnya buku ini tidak punya plot karena cerita mengalir saja, penuh dengan percakapan tak menentu. Ceritanya terkadang membosankan dan kebanyakan hanya menceritakan kisah keseharian si narator. Buku ini slow-paced dan banyak pengulangan. Dalam beberapa bagian, terlalu absurd dan ini merupakan tipe buku dimana tidak ada “hal besar” yang terjadi. 

GAYA PENULISAN DAN BAHASA

Gaya bahasanya frontal dan to the point. Saya sangat suka perspektif orang pertama yang digunakan dalam buku ini. Gaya penulisannya pun sangat khas, menggunakan kalimat yang pendek-pendek dan over-descriptive. Memang gaya penulisan seperti ini membuahkan kontroversi karena preferensi setiap pembaca berbeda. Banyak yang berpendapat bahwa ini merupakan penggunaan tata bahasa yang kurang tepat. Namun, saya pribadi menggemari gaya penulisan ini. Ada yang sadar saya mengetik review dengan gaya ini? Hehe! Mirip dengan karya Albert Camus, khususnya “The Stranger”. 

KARAKTER

Karakter utama, si narator, pada dasarnya adalah karakter yang tidak mudah untuk disukai. Pemikirannya kompleks, namun cuek dan narsistik di waktu bersamaan. Penuh rasa cemas dan kesepian, namun rasa percaya diri bisa muncul secara tiba-tiba. Ia punya kemampuan observasi yang luar biasa, namun penuh dengan rasa denial terhadap hal-hal tertentu. Bisa dibilang semacam anti-hero. Buku ini juga character-driven dan hanya berpusat pada tokoh yang itu-itu saja. 

ET CETERA.

Tidak ada judul bab—yang cukup banyak ditemukan di buku-buku modern. Hal ini bukan kekurangan yang signifikan, tetapi saya pribadi rindu dengan bab yang diberi judul. 

KESIMPULAN

Saya bisa mengapresiasi buku ini dari berbagai sudut, namun tetap mengandung hal-hal kecil yang kurang cocok dengan saya. Ada perasaan aneh, bahkan sedikit resah saat menyelesaikannya terutama di bab terakhir. Buku ini membuat penasaran, walau ada kalanya membuat bosan. Untuk saat ini, saya tidak tahu bagaimana perasaan saya terhadap buku ini. Tetapi mungkin akan saya baca ulang saat umur saya 20-an dan sedang mengalami quarter-life crisis untuk pemahaman yang lebih dalam (wkwk). 

Bagi kalian yang sedang di fase yang sama dan butuh buku yang beresonansi dengan kalian secara mendalam, ini cocok untukmu! Demi kesehatan mentalnya, si narator rela beristirahat dari dunia supaya bisa “terlahir kembali”. Walaupun hal ini ada sisi positif dan negatifnya… Moralnya? Sulit dijabarkan.
