It blows my mind that, with a small exception, Rebecca Cantrell has managed to fill an entire novel set underneath New York. It’s not just dirt and trains, it’s history, action, and heartbreak. It picks you up and transports you along faster than you can get from station to station. Joe Tesla is a sharp new main character that is as intriguing as he is endearing. Trapped underground with his four-legged service companion, Edison, they manage to stumble upon a decade’s old mystery that sends them running for their lives. Of course there’s also a larger story, but I don’t want to give any spoilers. I recommend you grab THE WORLD BENEATH as fast as you can so you too can escape down into tunnels with them! You’ll love the new characters…wish I had the technological expertise of Joe Tesla…and the fast pace! I only hope Rebecca Cantrell is writing the second one just as fast. My mind is already wandering the tunnels wondering where she’s going to take us next!!!

I should have not been able to put this book down: it was well written, it was exciting, it was suspenseful... but for some reason, I really had to push myself to finish it. Maybe it was me and not the book?

I read this in one weekend. For me, that’s saying something. I loved this book! The underground world is a good escape in the midst of quarantine. I will have to check out the other books in this series!

Hmmm, this was ok. Can’t really think of much to say about it tbh. I liked the idea behind the story and the start was good and intriguing but like most the last half was rushed and ended with a sudden and boring bang! Won’t be reading anymore in this series. Not for me!

Fast paced techno thriller with fantastic narration.

I love a computer nerd hero. And a good conspiracy. And a bit of action. And a gruesome death...or two. And getting inside the mind of the bad guy. Or is the other guy the bad guy? Or what about the girl? Who's side is she on anyway?

The World Beneath kept me guessing. I was engaged in the story the whole way through and was really happy with the way it wrapped everything up....until that last sentence that left me on a cliffhanger! Looking forward to the next installment.

I listened to the audiobook, which I received free via Audiobook Blast in exchange for an honest review. Jeffrey Kafer gives another fantastic performance. He is easy to listen to and speaks at a good pace.

The World Beneath is just a fun book. Joe Tesla is rich and extremely intelligent, but can’t go outside due to extreme agoraphobia. While in the tunnels under New York, he meets a man who is then brutally murdered near a long bricked in train car. Joe has to make sure he doesn’t get killed too, and in the process stumbles into a nightmare of a conspiracy.

Joe is charming and while obviously not fearless, he is determined and inventive. He’s a whiz with computers, but also understands people, which is a nice change. His service dog Edison is adorable, and I was more worried for him than I was for Joe. He also has a couple people who are wholly on his side, and they each bring their own strengths.

The plot is well-done. The tension holds throughout and even though the reader knows who all the players all, you still wonder what can happen next. And the fact that Joe can’t go outside, is basically trapped in the tunnels and Grand Central makes for an interesting complication. There are lots of shops, restaurants, etc, attached to Grand Central, but how far those tunnels stretch, subway, sewage, steam, is invaluable to Joe in his search for the truth.

The World Beneath is fast-paced and enjoyable. If it were a movie, my husband and i would go see it, no question. There’s no romance, lots of blood, which is part of the problem for at least one character, plenty of suspicious behavior and a great hero.

It’s the first in a series, but finishes its story. It’s not just a set-up for the next one, which I appreciate, but the end does give you a thread left untied for the next one.
