I'm happy to be done with Isabel, a spoiled Southern California blonde in France trying to gain sophistication and style through male approval and observation of the Parisian woman. Very good narrator and an excellent read for those who speak French. Diane Johnson is an excellent craftsman but I didn't care much for the main character.

I finished the book because I was engaged enough to want to know what happened. But I never engaged with any of the characters. And I think editors could have cut this down by half. Too much mundane details about unimportant events.

I vaguely remember seeing the movie. Divorce is not a big deal here, so I really didn't see what the big deal was with the title. While this book is centered around Roxy's divorce the book is really about Isabel becoming a woman in Paris. I've never been to Paris but now would love to go. Isabel is a very different person from me so I couldn't identify with her, and not sure if we would be friends. However, the story is very enjoyable and well written. I'm curious to read more of Ms. Johnson's books. What I liked most about Isabel is the fact that she realizes that Paris has changed her in ways that she never would have grown had she stayed in Santa Barbara.

This was a lot of fun, even though I did not particularly like the main character. I realize I'm about 20 years behind in reading this!

I liked the cultural differences portrayed in this book. I thought the main character had good voice while everyone else was also believable. The story was interesting and it ended sort of abruptly, but I thought overall it was a good book!

Witty, sharp turns and sardonic, more than the rather fluffy and directionless film.

Another book that has spent many years on my shelf waiting to be read, Le Divorce by Diane Johnson tells the story of a pair of American born stepsisters living in Paris. Roxeanne is a few months pregnant with her second child when her sister Isabel comes to Paris to help her through her pregnancy. The day Isabel arrives, Roxy’s husband leaves her for another (married) woman.

One essential ingredient in chick lit, is you root for the main characters- whether that be in new love, new job, getting back at ex's, etc... The characters are usually a little flaky but they are still funny, loveable women you want to be friends with. For this book, the two women Roxanne and Isabel just got on my nerves and were both unlikeable.

Isabel flies to Paris to stay with her pregnant sister Roxanne. When Isabel arrives she learns Rozanne's husband has left her for another woman. You would think the two sisters would band together, but no Isabel is too busy having an affair with some 70 year old man.
