I kind of wish that it ended with him finding her, but I still really liked this.

This was a short story which was only available in the first print runs of Lauren Oliver's Requiem. I'm hoping that it is reprinted for everyone who has yet to read it so that you can all enjoy it. The short story gives us a glimpse into the childhood of Alex, the torture he underwent in the Crypts, how he escaped and his slow path towards reuniting with Lena once again.

I really enjoyed this. It was fascinating to see how he grew up in The Wilds and how he developed some pyromaniac tendencies. His shock at his 'new' life in Portland - sleeping on the floor over the bed - and the horrendous torture he underwent. It was gruesome to read some of the details featured and it made me appreciate his character and strength so much more.

It was great to read the bombing and mass breakout of The Crypts from the point of view of a prisoner and to read how he succeeded in escaping. The language and world building was once again flawless - I've come to expect nothing less from Ms. Oliver. Definitely one of the best authors I've come across in awhile.

Another plus was seeing how in love with Lena Alex is. She is always on his mind and is what keeps him going through the torture. Once he is back in The Wilds he is single mindedly motivated in tracking down Lena. It was infuriating to see him wishing her well and to move on... completely different from the Alex we meet at the end of Pandemonium! This once again ends before Requiem begins, leaving a big gap in the narrative. Very frustrating but still a very, very enjoyable read.

In this short story, we get to know more about Alex's past. I love the way he describes his love for Lena and why she saved him.

Just a heads up, if you have one of the first edition hardcopy releases of Requiem, this story is included at the very end. In my opinion, it should be READ FIRST, before Requiem. There is some background on Alex as a youth, some reflections on time spent with Lena in book one, and we learn a little about what happened to him after he disappeared, but before that memorable moment he reappeared. I think it really would have been a great addition to the compilation "Delirium Stories" with Hana/Anabel/Raven rather than tacked on here, to read after the book/series has come to its conclusion.

I miss reading the delirium books for the first time, so so much. Loving this world to death. It felt nice visiting it again.

We get to know Alex's childhood, what happens to him after the last event in Delirium, how he escapes from the Crypts and his own journey of finding Lena in the Wilds. Honestly, this short story was a bit boring for me. And confusing. But I did liked some parts of it and even though I didn't enjoy this as much as I wanted to, I still like Alex's character. Here is my favorite quote:

“Sometimes I think maybe they were right all along, the people on the other side in Zombieland. Maybe it would be better if we didn't love. If we didn't lose either. If we didn't get our hearts stomped on, shattered: if we didn't have to patch and repatch until we're like Frankenstein monsters, all sewn together and bound up by who knows what. If we could just float along, like snow. But how could anyone who's ever seen a summer - big explosions of green and skies lit up electric with splashy sunsets, a riot of flowers and wind that smells like honey - pick the snow?”

Deja una falsa impresión de que Requiem será un libro increíble (una GRAN mentira).
