Vibrant illustrations and a beautiful, careful text. The death the book is concerned with comes in the middle: harsh, maybe, and unsentimental, but softened by artwork and gentle text, this explores what happens after death, both in terms of decomposition and the continuing life of foxes and woodland. I absolutely loved it.

Thanks to Bloomsbury and Edelweiss for early access to this title.
This is really a lovely book about a difficult subject - death and what happens when something dies. Using a fox, the author tells the science behind decomposition, and how all the elements of life are used by other creatures and plants in the cycle of living and dying. The end pages go into more depth, and help to educate kids on this process. The illustrations are lovely and tell the story without going into sentimentality. A great book to help kids who may have lost a pet, or just for anyone wanting to know more about this natural process. Highly Recommended!

Good grief. This was a lot. The fox definitely dies and it's just a lot before continuing with the life cycle. Back matter includes notes on what happens when something dies, what is death, what is decomposition, the cycle and life and death is not just an end.

Was not prepared for the circle of of life to be demonstrated by the adult fox being hit by a car, instead of dying of old age. But it is a beautifully illustrated book and explain things well in both the story text and the backmatter information. I can see using it with children/classes, but would need to use cautiously as it could be traumatic for any kids who have recently had a loss.

This book is beautiful. I've never seen a picture book that covers the topic of death and decay, but this book did, and did it in a way that was hopeful, visually stunning, and not at all frightening for children.

Emotional damage. Literally traumatizing. But excellent and important discussions to be had around life and death.
