It was okay. At some places it was funny. Mostly it was just interesting to learn about how doctors are doing. I appreciate why this book was written and I think that the healthcare system is worth fighting for. However, I wrote down in my reading notes first a bunch of things that were a bit interesting and then a bunch of things that remind us that doctors are human and have no problem calling their patients fat. Feel free to see all the ways the writer fucked up.

As someone, whose whole family is Catholic, it is very funny to keep hearing the same joke about how all of the priests are lusting over small boys. It is definitely not getting old nor starts to feel uncomfortable, because of the amount of priests that are actually there to help people.

The casual joking fatphobia in the book was disturbing especially coming from a doctor. Exactly the kind of attitude which results in worse care & outcomes for fat people when they need medical attention.

Overall I did enjoy the book though, and felt it did a good job communicating issues doctors in his position were facing. Curious to know how much (or little) has changed since its publication in 2017.

Very interesting to hear about these experiences working across various hospitals. At times, I honestly felt happy Adam is no longer working as a doctor, as sometimes his comments about patients were jarring and insensitive. I understand though that it is a very challenging job and, at the same time, Adam told many stories that made his care for patients very clear. I did enjoy Adam's writing though, and his ability to be humorous during times of stress was amazing.

obviously amazing i couldn't put it down at all. unfortunately adam kay does kind of come off as quite a dick in some scenarios like when he feels he has to trick people into getting the treatment they need, etc. he also makes a few really unnecessarily rude comments about a patients' weight. i'm really glad the uk has the nhs and i know nhs doctors go through a rough time but it's beyond "dark humour" to just straight up make fun of somebody's appearance. besides that the book is great.

Jan 2023: This must be my third or fourth reread of this incredibly special book. Kay is a master storyteller, and it's his finely balanced combination of light and dark that make this book so impactful. A must-read for anyone who has ever had even the briefest experience of the NHS.

Jan 2024: I don't think I'll ever be able to properly express how highly I recommend this book.
