Review
Well I was not expecting that! The Survival Weekend is a punching novella that is broken up into smaller chapters making it addictive and quick to read. Believe me you will want to find out what is happening with this one and the twist will leave you potentially reeling like it did me.
The premises sees Rebecca who after a messy split with her partner decides to sign up for an adventure weekend in Scotland and rope in her reluctant friend Phoebe as well. The pair are grouped with other entrants and given a simple task to hike to their first checkpoint. But one of the team, Luke, drops a bombshell on them. He informs them that the people pursing them are armed and come daybreak their game is altogether different. Prepared to play along believing he is one of the actors but not fully believing the group decides to ‘listen’ to Luke but when one of the group vanishes the threats suddenly become too real and panic settles into the group. If this is not a game and killers are on their trail how far will they go to survive and can they survive each other?

First of all I have to say well done to Kirby for getting me with a bit of red herring at the start. I have to say I was not prepared for the twists and turns, no spoilers though, that this novella was going to pack. At first I was excited thinking it was a pseudo Battle Royale (one my favourite books) novel but I have to say I was not expecting what it turned out to be. I also was not expecting such well rounded and developed characters. Novella’s are always, in my opinion, a difficult medium to use. It’s difficult to strike the balance and make characters stand out as well as plot and story but let me tell you Kirby delivers everything with ease! I was quickly invested in the characters and each one had a well rounded personality that got a chance to shine. The story was fast paced, action packed and full of twists and surprises which I loved. It’s hard to review more without giving a way too much but needless to say I will be reading more of Kirby’s work and if you love a good action packed thriller this is one you will enjoy.
