I really, really liked this take on magic. I feel like I say this about every single one of Black's books but I adore the way she tries each time to think of something someone hasn't done yet or, if it's something similar, put her own distinctive twist on it.
The writing was quick and witty, but realistic and human. Consiquences were real and twists felt more poss ble than those built for plot armour alone.
Appreciated forshadowing subtle enough that you could ignore it if you wanted, or you could follow the thread on your own.
Loved it. Can't wait to read the next.

I am disappointed. I enjoyed the Modern Faerie chronicles when I read them as a teen, but I won't be finishing this series. The characters' behaviors and interactions were frustrating, and the narrative continually tried to signal its progressive values without engaging with any Actually Hard Problems. The book wants to draw a parallel between its world's central conflict and real-life equal rights movements, but I felt like it really fell flat.
There's a lot of surface-level engagement with gender and race, and I hope for the sake of the people who continue on to the next few books that the author expands on this in a fruitful way in the sequels. Lots of moments that didn't feel great with regard to representation.
