My actual rating is a 4.5 because of some unevenness in the narrative line but I am rounding up because the characters were such unique and difficult individuals and the setting was fabulous. This is a book about the chafing that comes with living in a closed society (I'm sure we are all feeling this a bit in our current quasi-quarantine reality), about learning from nature and about understanding what individuals can do when pushed to edge of survival. I loved it all.

This book was beautifully written and I truly felt myself in the vivid Wilderness while reading it. Diane Cook touches on themes of survival, a crumbling world, corrupt policies, loss, and the complexities that come with a mother and daughter relationship. I loved being able to see the world through Agnes’ eyes and how everything wrapped up! If you grew up loving the post-apocalyptic societies and travels of Hunger Games, The Matched series, and/or The Walking Dead — you’ll enjoy this book!
