I really loved the way everyone’s stories were pieced together. There was also segments that contained information pertaining to the story to help give the reader perspective which was really helpful

Very interesting read from the perspective of the victim and the offender. Insightful look into the logistics of trials and the penal system, especially for youth. Intriguing look into the lives of both kids. Challenges the reader to hear two sides of a story and a reminder that a moment of bad decision making can change a life forever. We are not all our worst moments and we are not all our scars.
At times it felt this book dragged towards the last half. There were some parts that seemed to be filler content and didn’t add as much to the storyline. It was hard to see someone misgendered so much but I’m glad they included every time it happened to really showcase the way that agender, nonbinary, and trans people are often overlooked. Also hard to hear the stats of the way the justice system so negatively impacts black youth and how many lose friends and family to tragic deaths at such a young age. Guy wrenching read with heartwarming moments.

I don't recommend this book as a first or only source of information on the topic, because you can tell that the person who wrote it isn't directly effected by the things they're writing about e.g misgendering, using deadnames and using words and discriptions which aren't fitting or even hurtful

I ready liked some aspects of this book. I've not read a lot of young adult non-fiction and I found it very engaging. I think it tells a very important story about both sides of the crime and how it affected everyone involved and how unfair the US justice system is.

However, I do think this could really use an update. There are various points where I found the language used outdated and uncomfortable. Also while focusing on an agender teen, it felt like this book fell into its own binary of man and woman, and other. There was very little space in this book for the gender spectrum.

There were also a few descriptions of people that seemed unnecessary and made me feel kind of uncomfortable.
