I've read a lot of thrillers since getting back into reading in 2021, but I have to say, this is definitely in the top ten, maybe even top 5 that I've read.
Amelia lost her hearing two years before, and her world fell apart shortly thereafter. Her divorce has crumbled due to her newly found addiction to alcohol and her career as an ER nurse is gone. These days she's sober and trying to get back on her feet with her service dog - the best boy ever - Stitch. After finding a former friend and nurse murdered near her house, she struggles with piecing together the clues of the murder while simultaneously juggling getting back into the workforce, mending the relationship with her step-daughter, and finding sparks in an unexpected place.
This book had me on the edge of my seat, quite literally. At one point there was someone outside the cabin, and the curtains moved to her sliding door. At that exact moment someone walked into my office and I nearly fell out of my chair.

This was such a refreshing palate cleanser after my last read. I needed a heroine like Amelia, who is complicated, flawed, and most importantly, kind — a good person who, in the face of trauma, struggled in a very human way. I loved watching her reclaim herself. I guessed the twist earlyish, but enjoyed Amelia's journey getting there. Also, this one gets extra points for Stitch, the reluctant, most badass service dog. My only really complaint is that idk why she kept letting people pet him and why he was never wearing a vest!
