first, I think it's hilarious that this guy earned his MA with these stories. perhaps it's a precedent thesis. after this, no more fiction please! I think it'd do well rebranded (and perhaps enjoyed more) as a psychological thriller in which a deeply lonely man is manipulated into letting himself be spiritually tortured by strangers for four years.

that being said, I didn't love don Juan. every time he spoke I thought, "just answer the question, okay? please don't play with me right now..." I'd like to (baselessly) theorize that Castaneda really did do all of those drugs and don Juan was the result of a bad trip.

love reading about psy plants.
This one covers a lot about peyote and datura. The way don juan described them , the procedure to plant and pluck them, the experiences when one takes them for the first time was jarring

Probably all fake, but entertaining nonetheless.

The Teachings of Don Juan is an interesting exploration of Mexican Shamanism and the psychological impacts and experience of consuming and familiarizing with three hallucinogenics - Datura, Mushrooms and Peyote. Interwoven with themes of growth, self knowledge and apprenticeship, this book would be informative for anyone seeking to understand the master/student relationship through narrative form.
