This DEFINITELY is not everyone’s cup of tea. The writing is pretentious, it’s incredibly introspective, and no one can pull their head out of their ass. I loved it.

What is it about Rooney’s books that leaves me both satisfied and dissatisfied, especially with the endings?

This book is painfully much worse than the other novels by Rooney. Characters are flat, immature and irrealistic in the way they behave, talk and think. I genuinely cannot come up with anything to save in this book. Some topics that would have been interesting to delve into (mental health, women's health, father-daughter relationship) are just glossed over in such a superficial way. Even the main theme, love and its different forms, is described and narrated horribly. Characters are so annoying it was hard to empathize with anything they do.

“Was I kind to others? It was hard to nail down an answer. I worried that if I did turn out to have a personality, it would be one of the unkind ones. Did I only worry about this question because as a woman I felt required to put the needs of others before my own? Was “kindness” just another term for submission in the face of conflict? These were the kind of things I wrote about in my diary as a teenager: as a feminist I have the right not to love anyone.”

This book left me feeling…. a lot. Talk about a roller coaster of emotions. Elation one second and a sense of deflating the next. I’m pretty sure I hated every character (except Nick) at least 50% of the time or more. Frances was incredibly selfish and arrogant from the get go and didn’t have much growth - that’s one of the reasons I’m so conflicted about my feelings towards this book. I can’t tell if I actually liked any of the characters and I’m not sure how I read this book in 24 hours since I can’t even pinpoint how I feel about it.

A short character summary:

Frances: unbelievably annoying
Bobbi: also annoying and also arrogant but somehow worse than Frances because she doesn’t apologize for it
Melissa: don’t care
Nick: hot little cinnamon roll who deserved way better than he got

I think that sums it up as well as I’m able.

(P.S. Pretty upset that these characters got a better ending than Marianne and Connell in Normal People because I actually cared about them)
