I listened to the audiobook of this whilst reading along. I thought this book was incredible. It was so gory, cringey, and detailed though, that some parts made me have to put it down. The story was brilliant and full of twists and turns. I didn't expect the echo man to be who it was and that final twist at the end in the interview room.. wow 🤯. Can't wait to pick up the rest of this series.

Definitely some triggers - very dark, very well done plot, developed characters. Very dark.
Jess suffers from a medical condition - no recognition of pain. She cuts herself to watch her blood drip - counting on her longtime friend, now a prominent doctor at a local hospital, to provide stiches and care.
Jess wakes in the night to the sound of fire - grabbing her young daughter, they survive. But not her husband. Patrick is dead - and Jess is the primary suspect.
Cara and Noah are assigned to the case, as well as several other investigations; they seem unrelated until a major connection is revealed - someone is recreating famous serial killer's MO.
Jess escapes the hospital, working with Cara's brother Griffin to clear her name. Griffin has been recovering from his own personal tragedy - massive harm to his own body while listening to his wife being raped and murdered.
The murders continue; the leads are few; everyone is at risk.
Brutally written - excellent twists at the end that will keep you up at night, afraid of the dark.

I can definitely understand why readers like this thriller: it plays up people’s fascinations with serial killers while unfurling a new mystery for them to try to solve. It’s full of police procedure and CSI interests with it’s detailed series of steps, all in collaboration to catch a killer. And, it definitely doesn’t hold back on descriptive plot - readers beware.

But the story also relies on some overly-used stereotypes, the flawed woman who, bc she loathes herself, sleeps around; the heralded detectives who cannot spot the clues and connect the dots, yet a civilian seems to do so with whiplash speed. I didn’t think any of these devices were truly needed, and the mystery could have still stood tall with a skilled police force and strong female leads.

Overall, it was interesting enough to keep me invested, and the last fourth of the book kept a feverish pace that made me want to reach the end and the big reveal. I did have some accurate guesses along the way, but there are twists to make you second-guess your suspicions. Some of the final backstory did feel rushed and hugely unloaded in the epilogue, like the author just couldn’t carry the weight any longer. Not a total miss..upper middle-of-the road for me.
