It’s actually not entirely clear here how Alex identifies (though it is clear she is not a binary woman), and this book is definitely colored by her inclusion of cross-dressers and gender nonconforming people under the trans umbrella. Her ideas are definitely controversial, but she presents them with so much intelligence and empathy that you don’t really want to argue with her. She’s a good human, and the point here isn’t necessarily to tell you how it is but to provoke thought, and she does this fairly well. It’s not a perfect book but I like her, and I like the way she expresses herself on and off the page.
