Re-read. One of my favorites in the whole series, but also one that put me through the most emotional damage. **SPOILER BELOW**
When I tell you I was so distraught as a young child reading the drowning scene -- my mom made me put the book away for a day or two so I could stop sobbing. Because they chose the brash, wild, smiling Tancred to get drowned and I could only see my best friend at the time. When I finally got to the end of the book and experience Charlie seeing that Tancred is alive, I shared in that pure joy! Also, for the longest time I thought this was the last book in the series as a kid. It was only when I was about 13 that I saw the 8th book in a shop, so you can imagine those several years being left with the final image of all the friends (minus Billy) together again. It was a wonderful surprise and cemented this series as one of my all time favorites.

This in my opinion is one of the better “endings” to a series. It has an amazing build up to the main plot and a great world building structure. Things finally start to fall into place for Charlie when he finally gets his father back after believing he was gone forever.
