This book is an unlikely, unlikeable, messy jumble and it doesn't succeed at the surreal or more realistic elements.  Neither the plot nor the characterization is at all believable.

It is well-paced & suspenseful, with good characters but I wish we had more from Earl and less about Lowell. I wasn't a fan of that portion of the plot but it's necessary to get Emma where she needs to be within the story's context. I HATE Ray. He's an ass, I wasn't a fan of the student-teacher relationship that was inserted for seemingly no reason, along with making Ray Emma's step-brother. It just is unnecessary. The same things could have happened to Emma and Ray without that being the driving force behind their relationship.

I really enjoyed this. I liked how the author revealed parts of Emma’s past as the novel went on. The blending of little fantastical elements was fun too

Gripping, emotionally devastating — hey, listen. I know these words are thrown around for novels like this, but it’s true! The whole last 100 pages had my eyes swelling, with that painful hum of oncoming tears behind them. It’s a well-written, creepy, tense book that has a delicate heart underpinning everything.
