4.5 rounded to 5. I found this book quite emotionally affecting. I periodically had to take breaks because I just felt too deep inside the story. It wasn’t a bad thing though periodically did force me to take a breath and remember my real life lol. I was very invested in these characters. I couldn’t quite give it 5 stars because I felt that the book dragged in the middle. It could easily have been cut down by 100 pages in the middle. But who’s gonna tell Nora what to do? Not me! I also felt it some more lighthearted moments may have made it a more enjoyable read. But overall, it’s a really terrific book.

I enjoyed this. The predominantly male view point works well. Nice mix of characters and relationships between them all.

Wow. I don’t think I’ve felt so much for a character until this novel. Luke Callahan is my favorite hero in any of Nora’s novels.
Nora Roberts is an amazingly talented writer to begin with, but Honest Illusions tops the list in my opinion.
Roxanne and Luke are incredible, together and on their own. I loved following their journey from their childhood until the end. And Max and Lily were everything together! So endearing and so sweet.
Nora Roberts made me cry my heart out with this book. It’s a wonderfully romantic, heart-wrenching, passionate novel with frustrating moments when the characters don’t yet know what’s happening. All in all, this was an incredible read.
It’s on the longer side for her older stuff, which was why I hadn’t intended on reading it, but boy am I glad I did. Quite possibly one of my favorite novels ever.
Worth the read. Five stars.

3.5* A very enjoyable book, but not my favorite Nora Roberts. I think I'm prejudice because the protagonists are jewel thieves. Sounds silly, I know, but it bothered me throughout the whole book. Other than that, and a few standard plot devices (not bad, just well-used) I enjoyed the story and liked the main characters. The book was written in the early 1990's but doesn't suffer much from that.

It still amazes me how many very good books Nora Roberts has written. Her suspense books are my favorite. She always layers her stories, adding details and complexity, often crossing continents or spanning years. She obviously researches her settings, both the physical/geographic setting and the setting for the story, such as the world of magicians and jewel heists for Honest Illusions. Robert's attention to detail never fails to gain my appreciation.

I loved the prologue, but didn't like how we immediately Part 1 when they are children and we have to spend so much time with them growing up together.
SpoilerI was very uncomfortable with the gross sexualization of Roxy when she was a child by Sam and also by Luke. She was literally 13 while Sam was older than 18 and Luke was 17. There was also very casual discussion of attempted sexual assault and also Roxy being recorded without her consent. I also did not like how Sam is apparently going to be a fixture in the story or the storyline about Luke being sexually abused as a child, which is embedded with potential homophobia.
