I'd read the first novel in this compilation, Quicksand, years ago for a class about literature in the 1920s and then finally read Passing after having seen Rebecca Hall's 2021 adaptation of it. (I found it to be a very faithful adaptation, by the way. It really captured the subtleties of Larsen's writing.) Larsen has a way of making every word count, even--especially--when it comes to describing thoughts and feelings that are sort of ephemeral and ineffable.

Nella Larson's prose is effortless, as she paints the internal worlds of her female protagonists.
I read Passing and loved it. It's the most nuanced examination of the Black female experience. The double standards, the hypocrisy and the internal struggle.Â
It's also a window into the Harlem Renaissance.
I came to this short story after watching the film, which is an accurate adaptation. I'm glad I found this author.Â
