I'd read the first novel in this compilation, Quicksand, years ago for a class about literature in the 1920s and then finally read Passing after having seen Rebecca Hall's 2021 adaptation of it. (I found it to be a very faithful adaptation, by the way. It really captured the subtleties of Larsen's writing.) Larsen has a way of making every word count, even--especially--when it comes to describing thoughts and feelings that are sort of ephemeral and ineffable.
