Some good short stories. I’ve been putting off reading love crafts stories but they were better than I had expected

The stories in this collection feature  Lovecraft's well-known crossover themes: the Elder Gods, Cthulhu and the Necronomicon. They are better than some of the other sorry stories I've read that basically go "I explored a place, it was scary, then something happened that I can't describe cos it was so scary." When HPL actually describes the horror it is effectively done. When he gets stuck on which race a character represents and makes all sorts of allusions to inherent characteristics of those races, I've had enough of him. I understand he was writing in a different context, but still, it brings the stories down.
