This book is a definite improvement on the first book in the series. A lot of the blatant misogyny in the first book (when discussing Rizzoli as well as other characters) is gone, which I appreciate. The author is clearly trying to get at the ideas of sexism and internalized misogyny within the police force; however, I am not sure she succeeds. Although many of Rizzoli's actions are based in her identity as a woman in a male-dominated role, the way the author has written her makes her come across as rather unlikable.
This book focuses less on the specific investigative details of the case and focuses instead on the impact of the case on Rizzoli personally, which is an interesting lens, but leaves me wanting. There were several places throughout the book where I thought there were obvious investigative steps that could have been taken. Isles is also not yet a main character, but I am hoping that happens in the next book. I do not hope that Thomas Moore returns as a character.
Overall, in this book, we see Rizzoli grow a lot of depth as a character; however, she is still written within the confines of what I see as a misogynistic lens, which makes me like the book less. I do find myself enjoying the story and it is definitely very creepy.
