Fall is in the air, and a scary looking monster is on the loose in a neighborhood. Can the neighborhood kids come together to stand against both the monster and the bullying teens who have been picking on them in time for Halloween trick-or-treat?

A really great sequel! Took everything that was good about the first book and doubled it.

I liked how easily the vignette style narrative of the last volume transitioned to a more flowing narrative, giving some more time to fleshing out our cast of kids and giving a deeper look into them. Identity and being comfortable with who you are were such big concepts in the last story and some of those journeys are expanded on here with a new autumn coating.

Even though our characters face bullying, the fear of upsetting family dynamics, and a new threat that looms over the cardboard kingdom, there is always this positive air to the story that never comes across as overly saccharine. There is something so reassuring about all of these kids coming together for each other, depicting so much loyalty and trust as they imagine together.

I will say, this one does move a little more slowly than the previous installment, but it's not too hard to muscle through the more dragging bits.

Always fun to spend time with these characters, especially for Halloween

An adorable follow-up to Cardboard Kingdom. The bullying aspect is the only reason I went to a 4(.5!) instead of a pure 5. I'm not sure it was handled super well. Overall, though, I really enjoyed this. It's a great middle grade series!

Reading 2021
Book 133: The Cardboard Kingdom #2: Roar of the Beast by Chad Sell

#graphicnovelOctober continues. This book is a middle grade read for ages 9 and up.

The gang is all back from the first installment with some new adventures. There is a beast on the loose in the neighborhood and the gang must solve the mystery. Everyone is trying to work on their Halloween costumes, but this beast mystery is draining the attention. There are also some trigger elements in the story including bullying.

These books would be fan favorites in a classroom library. I definitely enjoyed this installment more than the first one. My rating 4 ⭐.
